The Witches

Roald Dahl’s novel The Witches is a perfect summer read for your nine year old (and up) .  Growing up, Grandmamma always told stories about witches and how much they hated children.  Her grandson found this out the hard way when he met The Grand High Witch and is turned into a mouse.  Now he and his  new friend Bruno, also captured and changed into a mouse by the witch, must find a way  to save all the children in England from becoming mice.

Dahl has such a great way of creating unique and fun characters.  His storytelling is filled with humor and wit that is certain to keep all ages interested.  It is also refreshing to see how empowering Dahl makes his children characters.  He puts them in challenging situations and makes them solve problems that often encompasses the entire world of children.  If you are looking for a book to read aloud with your younger reader, this would be a perfect choice.  The story is filled with amazing descriptions and engaging dialogue that is excellent for  dramatic reading.

Trivia Answer

Answer: utopia-Utopia  Thomas More was a man of many hats in his day.  He was an English Lawyer, philosopher, author, and statesman.  He was also an adviser to Henry VIII for a few years.  Since More’s coining of the word utopia, we have also created the word dystopia to represent the  opposite of an ideal state.  Now there are several books set in a dystopic world, such as The Giver, Brave New World, 1984Uglies, Life as We Knew ItHunger Games, etc…

Thief Lord

Cornelia Funke’s novel The Thief Lord is an excellent kids adventure tale.  Prosper and Bo runaway to Venice after the death of their parents.   Inititally, the two brothers runaway in order to stay together and avoid being separated by their mean aunt, but once they arrive in Venice the two boys meet a band of street urchins who are lead by the Thief Lord.  The two are welcomed into the group and are loving their new life, even if it is a bit unconventional .  The only problem is that their aunt and a detective are catching up to them.

Funk did an wonderful job creating an atmosphere that transports her readers to Venice.  You get a sense of the community as well as the city, making for a great setting to this adventure.  The characters are well done and easy to relate to, whether you are a kid or an adult.  Don’t start this book right before you want to sleep as Funk created such an exciting tale,  it keeps you glued to the book until the very end.
