Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson is a wonderful love story that brings to light all of the obstacles that one must overcome to find happiness.  Major Pettigrew is now retired and living a quiet life in the English country side.  After his brother passes away, the Major soon starts a new friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper in his village.  Their friendship blossoms and soon there is an uproar in town about “proper” relationships.  An incredibly well written book that focuses on the characters’ development and the culture of the village.  This has been a very popular novel with bookclubs, and would make for a nice summer read.
