The Cardturner by Louis Sachar is an excellent young adult read.  Alton’s parents are forcing him to drive his old uncle Lester to his bridge games and be his cardturner.   His uncle is blind, very sick, and rich, thus making his parents want to get on Lester’s good side and hopefully end up in the will.  So now Alton is at every game, and starting to have an interest in learning bridge.  As the summer progresses, Alton and his uncle begin to grow very fond of each other and develop a very endearing relationship.

Sachar has written such a terrific book.  He has great characters that keep you entertained and coming back for more.  I loved that you also learned a little bit about bridge; at the end of  several chapters,  Sachar includes hints on how to play the game.  It was a great read and overall a wonderful coming of age story.
