Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History by Deanne Stillman is an intense recounting of the criminal Donald Kueck’s brutal attack and the manhunt that followed. Her book is not only well written, but the research that was needed to detail this story is quite impressive. I enjoy reading true crime books and Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History is one of the best of this genre. While I know a bit about Los Angeles, the descriptions of LA county and the vastness of the area the sheriff has to cover are immense. She does an excellent job combining the history of the area and the shooting that started the manhunt.
